Heneb marks a new era for Welsh archaeology, uniting the expertise of four regional trusts. Learn about our mission to protect and celebrate the rich heritage of Wales for future generations.

In 2024, a new chapter began for Welsh archaeology. Heneb was born, uniting the expertise and passion of four regional archaeological trusts—Clwyd-Powys, Dyfed, Glamorgan-Gwent, and Gwynedd. For nearly five decades, these trusts worked tirelessly to uncover, protect, and share the rich history of Wales. Now, Heneb steps in to continue their legacy, but with a fresh, united approach.

Heneb isn’t just about preserving the past—it’s about shaping the future of archaeology in Wales. Together, we’re taking on new challenges, creating exciting opportunities, and keeping Wales’ history alive for generations to come.

Why Bring the Trusts Together?

So, why merge trusts that were already doing such great work? The decision wasn’t taken lightly, but the answer is simple: strength in numbers. By joining forces, Heneb is better equipped to tackle the modern challenges of archaeology, like climate change, urban development, and the growing public interest in heritage.

Here’s what Heneb is all about:

  • Protecting Our Past: From ancient forts to industrial landmarks, Heneb ensures the historic environment is safeguarded for the future.
  • Boosting Research and Community Engagement: With combined expertise, we can dive even deeper into history and bring more people along for the journey.
  • Responding to Today’s Pressures: Whether it’s environmental threats or rising development, Heneb has the tools to act quickly and effectively.

At the same time, Heneb remains grounded in the local identities and expertise that have shaped Welsh archaeology for decades. Regional offices ensure that local expertise and community connections remain at the heart of everything we do.

Building on a Proud Legacy

The work of the former Trusts is woven into the story of Welsh archaeology. For almost 50 years, they have done an incredible job protecting Wales’s heritage. They safeguard countless archaeological sites and artefacts while connecting communities with their shared history.

Heneb isn’t here to replace that legacy—it’s here to build on it. By embracing innovative technology, strengthening community programs, and forming new partnerships, Heneb is ensuring Wales’ past remains vibrant and accessible to everyone.

“We’re proud to continue the pioneering work of the regional trusts while embracing new opportunities to explore and protect our shared heritage,”

said a Heneb staff member.
