This Cadw-funded project examined the evidence for pre-Norman ecclesiastical sites in the former counties of Glamorgan and Gwent. A desk-based assessment brought together documentary sources, place-name evidence, and archaeological data to review known sites and identify new ones. The study significantly expanded the dataset, raising the number of recognised sites from just 30 to over 220, including 92 new entries. Many were identified through analysis of the Book of Llandaff and other early sources, while excavation evidence remains limited. The project provides a much stronger basis for understanding the distribution and character of early ecclesiastical activity in southeast Wales.
