As part of Cadw’s threat-related assessment programme, this project reviewed the condition and significance of medieval and post-medieval crosses across southwest Wales. Of more than 100 known sites, 83 were assessed and 60 visited in the field. Many crosses are damaged or have been moved from their original locations, and only a few currently have statutory protection. The survey highlighted several notable examples that merit designation and confirmed the importance of these monuments as a distinctive but under-represented element of the region’s historic environment.
