As part of Cadw’s 2007 programme to address under-represented monument types, Dyfed Archaeological Trust evaluated medieval fortified dwellings in the region. The study focused on mottes, moated sites, and ringworks recorded in the Historic Environment Record. Of 180 records reviewed, 22 sites were selected for detailed assessment and visited in early 2009. The survey confirmed examples of mottes, moated sites, and a ringwork, while also reclassifying several records as later farmsteads, Iron Age enclosures, or sites no longer identifiable. The project has clarified the survival and significance of this important monument class, informing future scheduling priorities.
