This project is the first Cadw-funded assessment of Wales’s 20th-century military airfields. Focusing on the flying fields and technical areas identified on wartime Air Ministry plans, the study examines 17 aviation sites in southwest Wales—primarily in Pembrokeshire—alongside several smaller army airstrips. Fieldwork and documentary research revealed that, while the quality and extent of remains vary, runways, perimeter tracks, and many associated structures still survive. The project highlights the significance of these airfields as key elements of Wales’s wartime landscape and provides an essential foundation for future research, protection, and heritage management.
