The legacy of the Conscientious Objectors’ project was a partnership project led by Dyfed Archaeological Trust including Wales for Peace and Brecon Beacons National Park with funding from the Brecon Beacons Trust and Cadw. Working around the Llyn y Fan Fach on the Western edge of the Brecon Beacons the project sought to explore the history of the construction of the water main and dam by conscientious objectors during the First World War. It has involved local people and school children in discovering archaeology and understanding the significance of the site.

Educational Resources

The project produced this education resource. During the project two local secondary schools and a primary school visited this fascinating site and took part in a variety of classroom activities relating to their visit. It is hoped that this educational resource will be used by schools to encourage and enable school children to discover the historical significance and broad educational potential.

The resources have been developed by a qualified teacher to work with key stage 3 to coincide with curriculum work on the First World War. The lessons have as many links to the curriculum as possible, including Geography and Science. Some of the resources may need to be adapted to suit your class’s needs and age group.

Before teaching any of the units it is advised that you visit Llyn y Fan Fach to familiarise yourself with the site.
